Minolta
If you are a fan of the Minolta Maxxum, you are not alone. They have been around for over a decade and many photographers collect them. Being that Minolta is no longer in business, if you are considering purchasing a used Minolta, please be aware that there are certain things you should look for to ensure yourself a good buy, as there are no longer replacement parts available if you get a “no good” camera. No two Minolta cameras are the same. This is in part because they were manufactured in different parts of the world. Some were produced in Japan, others in Malaysia and China. Many fans of the Minolta Maxxum claim that the cameras made in Japan are the best built and most reliable. There is however, no substantiated evidence of such a claim. The other reason that no two Minolta cameras are the same is because no two cameras have the same history. Some cameras have been abused and repaired numerous times, whereas others have been treated like delicate flowers and well cared for.
Like all camera brands, the Minolta Maxxum has had some problems with different models. Again, problems could be due to how a particular camera was treated, so always do your homework when you are buying used equipment. Purchasing from a trustworthy local camera dealer is always a good idea. This way you get to inspect the used camera before you buy it. Always look for exterior scratches and dents; they are the most obvious signs of abuse to the camera. If shopping locally is not an option, there are many reputable online dealers you can go to. With sites like Ebay, it is a hit and miss. Don’t get me wrong, there are many professional photographers that are honest and have treated their Minolta cameras like gold. The problem is that you as the buyer have to find the honest sellers, and that is not always an easy task when it comes to used camera equipment. If I were purchasing just any camera I would not say you would have to be as careful. But with Minolta out of business, you are going to be out of luck if you get a bad egg.
